Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree.


Clearance Requirements:

Current Department of Defense SECRET security clearance is REQUIRED at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities for this Position

GDMS has an immediate opening for a Mechanical / Controls Engineer with controls experience to fill an opening on our operations team.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  GDMS employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.


 The Mechanical / Controls Engineer will provide design and analysis support for program tasking and deliverables, working independently and/or with a team of project engineers, as specific tasking dictates.  Scope of tasking can include design, development and testing of mechanical and electromechanical systems, utility sub-system components, and the related control systems.  Work involves hands-on development (design, prototyping, and testing) of one-of-a-kind solutions for long-term development tasking and also in support of operational programs, often in quick response capability (QRC) mode.  Support on Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) includes overall deliverable integration, preparation and presentation of design milestone reviews, scheduling and planning duties, and other special assignments on a diverse range of technical tasking.  The role requires working with the program team and sub-contractors in addition to direct interface with customer representatives.



  • Engineering background with a demonstrated proficiency in mechanical design and control systems is required
  • Experience with preparation and presentation of technical documentation and briefings to communicate design requirements and specifications, technical trades, analysis results, and recommendations to customer technical and management staff is required
  • Hands-on assembly and testing experience with interest/ability to fabricate physical proof-of-concept mock-ups in a shop/highbay environment is a plus



  • Performs design and development in such areas as mechanical, controls, hydraulic, and/or power for production, transmission, measurement, and use of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, and/or machines
  • Leads development of strategic tasks or small projects by applying engineering and organizational knowledge and expertise to achieve technical goals
  • Understands and interprets the technical, organizational and process aspects of the task assigned and can relate them to the technical needs of the overall project
  • Plans and executes small projects or task elements within larger projects, organizations, or for groups of projects
  • Responsible for the completion of assigned engineering tasks or small projects within budgetary and scheduling guidelines
  • Actively uncovers technical and organizational risks and ensures they are included in risk mitigation plans
  • Participates in development of program strategies and teaming strategies as they relate to the assigned task
  • Conducts feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs
  • Directs support personnel in the preparation of detailed design, design testing and prototype fabrication
  • Carries out other tasks, not listed, assigned by supervisor
  • Travel may be required

  • Security clearance is required

  • May require a government counter-intelligence polygraph at future date



  • Solid proficiency and able to perform all responsibilities associated with the position
  • Grasps and applies new information quickly
  • Solid ability to handle more complex assignments
  • Proficiency with solid modeling CAD tools to create mechanical models and accompanying drawings is a plus
  • Shows initiative on assignments, exercises independent judgment and professionally executes projects with little direction
  • Solid knowledge with technical standards, manufacturing/fabrication methods, government/industry standards
