Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, a related specialized area or field is required (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience.


Department of Defense Top Secret security clearance is required at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities for this Position

General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Senior Advanced Systems Engineer.  This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems.  General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.


The individual in this position will work in a highly collaborative environment with peers, associate contractors, military personnel and senior government personnel supporting a classified program at NBK, Bangor, WA. The selected candidate will lead a team of experienced GDMS individuals in System Administration, Electrical, Optical, and Mechanical Engineering and Tech Support of the end product. This individual must have Electrical and Mechanical Engineering experience and/or experience as a System Administrator in a Microsoft Windows environment. They will assist with the repair, and upgrade activities on a classified system. This will include software updates, hardware refreshes/modifications, and electrical and fiber testing. The person in this position must also coordinate with all associated contractors and government officials as the primary liaison for data management, system auditing and data distribution.


Additionally, the individual will have either been a Certified Navy Instructor or have experience in personnel training processes and or techniques. They may function as an instructor and/or training facilitator, to include working with the management team to schedule training and training exercises. They may develop and/or modify course content, learning objectives and prepare course lesson plans and student manuals. Evaluates training materials and procedures and/or recommends revisions to these materials and procedures in order to insure that training courses remain current and compliant with prevailing standards and mission objectives.  



  • Conduct system repairs and upgrade tasks (software, hardware, electrical testing and fiber testing) while ensuring that all activities are carried out in accordance with quality and productivity standards.
  • Professional etiquette and ability to operate effectively in a distributed team environment and effectively communicate customer initiatives, strategy and mission needs.
  • Effectively communicate site problems concerns and observations to program management in a timely manner.
  • Share information, mentor peers, subordinates, and end users on systems provided by GDMS
  • Exercise creative thinking and ideation to advance our business performance
  • Deliver innovative, flexible, integrated solutions to meet customers changing business needs
  • Support and engage in programs, projects and practices behind the GDMS culture and strategy, and comply with all policies and procedures
  • Follow industry and department trends and developments to ensure GDMS services are consistent with, and/or superior to, industry best practices
  • Responsible for the completion of assigned engineering projects within budgetary and scheduling guidelines
  • Performs detailed technical analyses for a subsystem or system elements
  • Identifies, analyzes and resolves system design weaknesses
  • Participates in continuous process improvement efforts
  • Provide leadership and/or direction to lower level employees
  • Responsible for the administration of site training materials and technical manuals in support of new hardware and software installations.
  • Coordinates with program management and customer/contractor to prepare training schedules and man-hour estimates.
  • Provides classroom and hands on instruction to Navy personnel on system operation.
  • Willingness to share information, train and mentor peers and subordinates.
  • Exceptional oral, presentation and written communication skills.
  • Superior organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Exercises latitude in determining technical objectives of assignments



  • Microsoft System Administration experience (MCSA preferred)-Cisco Network Administration experience (CCNA preferred) (or Navy Equivalent)
  • CompTIA Security + certification, required within 6 months of obtaining position
  • Navy Certified Trainer or be knowledgeable in Training standards and processes.
  • Hands on Electrical or Mechanical Engineering experience (or Navy equivalent)
  • Linux, UNIX, and/or Solaris OS experience
